Washington the Freemason

So, I’m watching Dr. James Kennedy of the Coral Ridge Hour Sunday morning, as is my habit, and am very excited to see that he was going to discuss the fact that George Washington was a Freemason. Yawn. Boy, was I disappointed!

Now, first off, Dr. Kennedy is a great American, and I will continue to watch his program. He truly is in love with his Savior and this lost and dying world. Still, I’ve noticed on his program, presumably on my part, that he has some problems with the Craft. I guess, at least this time, my assumptions were true.

I have often challenge people over the good or bad of Masonry by asking them if they thought Washington was a fool or a fraud. I’ve argued that he had to be one or the other. Either he was duped by the “higher” ranked Masons or he was part of the great conspiracy himself.

Well, unbeknownst to me, there is apparently a third alternative. Dr. Kennedy’s researchers determined that, yes, Washington was a Mason, he just wasn’t all that involved. They claimed that he only attended Lodge on four occasions in over forty years of being a Mason. Furthermore, they suggested that Masonry is different now than it was then. It wasn’t as “antagonistic” to religion as it is now. Sheesh! Where do they get this dribble?

If you don’t like Masonry and think we’re a bunch of devil-worshipers, pagans, or whatever, it’s a free country and you’re welcome to your opinion, but if you’re going to go on national television, at least do a modicum of investigation on the subject. I love Dr. Kennedy, but his researchers really let him down on this one.

For starters, to say Washington only attended four lodge meetings in patently absurd, since three of those meetings would’ve been dedicated to him receiving his three degrees. When would that fourth appearance have occurred? Perhaps when he was elected, twice by the way, as Worshipful Master of his lodge? (I suppose they weren’t overly concerned that he never showed up during those two terms of office.) Ridiculous!

Not only was he Master of his lodge two years in a row, he was one of the founders of that very lodge: Alexandria No. 1, (Now known as the Alexandria-Washington Loge No. 1.) He served with dignity, enthusiasm and with equal pleasure to himself and honor to his fraternity. This office he held even while holding the office of President of our great nation. True, he was not the only Masonic president, but he was the only one to serve as Worshipful Master of his lodge while serving as President of our country.

Even more so, upon his death, as requested in his last will and testament, he was given a Masonic funeral by his brethren. The final statement he wanted to make about his life, was his pride that he belong to the oldest and grandest fraternity in existence.

Washington an indifferent Freemason? Masons “different” than they were two hundred years ago? I don’t think so! Leave it to the profane to jump to their own conclusions about something they know practically nothing about. What’s next? Will someone accuse Brother Washington of being a Deist???
